Firecomms MDK Expedite Development of Converters and Repeaters for Fast Ethernet and 1394b over POF
Posted September 27, 2006

Firecomms Ltd., a leading compoundsemiconductor company that develops high-speed light sources in visible range wavelengths, today announced the availability of two media development kits (MDK) that will enable the rapid deployment of copper-to-POF (plastic optical fiber) converters and repeaters for 1394b and Fast Ethernet. Each kit is a complete reference design that enables developers to quickly enter the market for copper-to-POF converters and repeaters.

Comprehensive engineering tools, Firecomms’ new Fast Ethernet over POF MDK and 1394b over POF MDK enable developers to set up a working network link (1394b/FireWire/i.LINK or Fast Ethernet) over a length of POF to evaluate the performance of Firecomms’ 1394 and Fast Ethernet FOTs (fiber optic transceiver) as well as the link’s quality of service.

POF Day Symposium @ OFC/NFOEC '07 Announced
Posted September 19, 2006

Plastic optical fiber is a low cost optical transmission media useful for short distance data and sensor applications. Unlike glass optical fibers, plastic optical fibers require simple tools, are user friendly and operate in the visible range making it easier to diagnose if there is a problem. All these points and more will be presented at "POF Day" comparing POF with glass optical fibers (GOF), wireless and copper wires. Up to now, plastic optical fiber have not been a focus of OFC/NFOEC. This represents a major new thrust for OFC/NFOEC!

During POF Day, The Plastic Optical Fiber Trade Organization (POFTO) offers presentations and demonstrations on POF Technology and applications. The objective is to show what POF is and can do, what are the key applications, new technology, and demonstrations on the ease of connectorization and handling. It is intended for those not familiar with POF technology and recent applications. Exhibits of POF products will be on display at the POFTO Pavilion during the exhibit.

A tentative schedule follows:

1:00 - 1:30 Overview of POF Technology and Applications
1:30 - 2:00 New Fiber Developments
2:00 - 2:30 40 Gbps Links using Plastic Optical Fiber
2:30 - 3:00 Networking Break
3:00 - 3:20 POF Optical Sources
3:20 - 3:40 POF Connectors
3:40 - 4:00 Plastic Clad Silica Fibers
4:00 - 4:20 Review of POF International Standards
4:20 - 4:50 New Product Presentations (10 mins. each)
4:50 - 5:00 POFTO Goals and Objectives
